Here is a sample letter to use:

    Dear Colonel Gallagher:

Dumping mine tailings into lakes and rivers is a bad idea. That's why Congress passed the Clean Water Act more than 30 years ago-to ensure our waters would be safe and clean. I am therefore urging you to revoke the permit that the Army Corps of Engineers issued to gold mining company Coeur d'Alene Mines to dump contaminated mining waste into Lower Slate Lake in the Tongass National Forest in Alaska.

Never before has the Corps permitted a mining company to dispose of its tailings directly in a lake or river protected by the Clean Water Act. It should not start now, especially in a place like Alaska, where people depend on clean water for recreation, quality of life, and livelihood.

The Corps should revoke this destructive, illegal, and unprecedented permit and replace it with a legal permit that protects Alaska's waters.

Thank you for considering my views.

    Sincerely,

    XXXXX

Clean water is essential for Alaska's future. Juneau can have a healthy environment and jobs. Let's do it right.
